Study Help!
Spelling
- Sound It Out: Children can learn to spell some words by sounding out each letter as they read it aloud.
- Talk About It: Point out that most of the spelling words are similar and follow the same pattern!
- Practice Test: Say a word and have your children write the word down on paper.
- Repetition: Have your child write each word three times. They can write in three different colors if they wish.
- ABC Order: Students write their word list in alphabetical order.
- Illustrator: Draw and color a picture of the word. Use the spelling word in a caption to describe it!
- Write A Sentence/Story: Students should write using the word in context. They should only worry about the spelling of the assigned words!
- Red and Blue: Write the consonants in blue and the vowels in red.
- Scrabble/Bananagrams: Use Scrabble or Bananagram tiles to create each word and then write them on paper. If you don't have these games, you can write the words on a piece of paper and make your own tiles!
- Word Search: Make a word search on a piece of paper and have a friend or family member solve it!
- Magazine Mania: Cut letters out of a magazine and glue them to a piece of paper.
- Rice Bowl: Write the words with your finger using a bowl of rice and then write each word on paper.
- Shaving Cream: Write the words with your finger using shaving cream and then write each word on paper.
- Be The Teacher: The student reads aloud the spelling list while the adult writes the spelling words in list. Some words are spelled correctly while others are not! The student must be the teacher and read each word, correcting the misspelled words!
- Flashcards: Write the word and a picture on one side of an index card and the definition on the other. Students can sort into piles of "know" and "don't know"
- Concentration: Write each word on a card and the definitions on another card. Students must match the word to its definition.
- Heads Up! Write each word on a sticky note and place it on a forehead. Take turns describing the word! (cylinder - This is a noun! It describes the shape of something. An example would be a pipe or water bottle!)
- Scavenger Hunt: Display the vocabulary words on a piece of paper in a visible place at home. Your child is on the lookout for the words being used in everyday life. He/she may hear it being used in conversation at the dinner table, while watching a TV show or reading a bedtime story. If a word is heard, he/she must tally the word on the paper and see which word was used most often!
- Sentence Maker: Practice using the words in sentence. Make sure the words are used correctly in the sentence and that it provides enough detail!
- Write A Story: Students should write a story using as many vocabulary words as they can.
- Illustrator: Write the word and draw a picture of it!
- Talk About It: Re-read the word, definition and example with your child. Talk about other ways to use the words, too!
